Fit Notes
Patagonia has slowly shifted its block toward a slightly slimmer, more contemporary cut over the last few years, so a Better Sweater from ten years ago and one bought today do not fit identically at the same size. The current Nano Puff and Down Sweater are drafted with a moderate layering allowance — enough for a fleece, not a heavy midweight — and buyers who plan to layer aggressively should look at the Nano-Air or DAS Parka instead. Baggies shorts run true to waist size and the 5-inch, 7-inch, and 10-inch inseams behave predictably. Women's Patagonia is drafted on its own block rather than a scaled men's pattern, and the women's Houdini in particular is cropped and cannot be sized off the men's chart.
Common Sizing Mistakes
The common mistake is treating Patagonia as still-boxy the way it used to be and sizing down — that produces a snug modern fit that many long-time buyers find uncomfortable. On women's, buyers often assume the Houdini shell is drafted like the men's; it's actually slightly cropped in the body and sized on its own chart, so a men's-to-women's substitution never quite lines up. A third pitfall is the Retro-X and Retro Pile fleeces — they use a bulkier, older block than the current Better Sweater, so a Better Sweater size is not a Retro-X size at the same number.
How Patagonia Compares
Against The North Face, current Patagonia insulation is a touch trimmer through the chest and slightly shorter in the sleeve at the same nominal size. Against Arc'teryx — the closest technical comparison — Patagonia is roomier and more forgiving in the shoulder. Against Cotopaxi, Patagonia is more consistent between drops but a hair less generous in the hood volume.
