Fit Notes
Adidas leans on a European block, which shows up as a slightly slimmer chest, a shorter body length, and a higher armhole than comparable US brands. Footwear varies more by silhouette than most people expect: Ultraboost and NMD fit snug in the forefoot and tend to run a half-size small, while Stan Smith, Samba, Gazelle, and Spezial run long and roomy enough that sizing down half is the default recommendation. The three-stripe trackpants are cut for a taper, not a straight leg, and the leg opening is noticeably narrower than a Nike Club fleece pant. Football (soccer) jerseys use a separate performance chart and run one full size smaller than the Originals line.
How Adidas Compares
Adidas Originals tees fit noticeably slimmer than a Nike Sportswear tee of the same nominal size, closer in cut to a Puma Classics or Fila Heritage piece. On the shoe side, Adidas generally runs a half-size longer than Nike, so a Nike 10 buyer is usually an Adidas 9.5 — the opposite of what most people assume. Against Reebok (owned by Adidas until 2021), the Adidas Samba is a hair narrower through the toe box than a Reebok Club C but shares a very similar heel volume, which is why cross-shoppers rarely need to change size between the two.
Common Sizing Mistakes
Buyers routinely order Sambas and Gazelles in their normal sneaker size and end up sliding around — both models genuinely need to come down half a size, and the Handball Spezial is even more forgiving of a downsize. On apparel, the mistake is ignoring the EU numeric size on the label (48, 50, 52) and defaulting to the S/M/L, which is a rough translation and not always consistent between the Originals, Performance, and Y-3 lines. A third pitfall is Ultraboost 5 vs. Ultraboost 1.0 sizing — the last has been revised multiple times, and a buyer's old size from three generations back is not a safe reference for the current model.
