Fit Notes
Zara publishes its sizes in EU numbering and cuts them for a slim European body — arms are narrower, shoulders sit closer, and women's dresses in particular are drafted short through the torso, which is why petite buyers often find Zara easier than tall shoppers do. Sizing is also inconsistent between the TRF, Woman, Origins, and ZW Collection lines within the same store, and a medium in one line is regularly a size off a medium in another. Outerwear runs the smallest of any category — a peacoat or overcoat rarely closes cleanly over a chunky sweater in the buyer's usual size — and is where sizing up is almost always the right call. Menswear shirts are cut with a very high armhole that restricts range of motion for broad-shouldered builds.
Common Sizing Mistakes
The most common return is a blazer or coat ordered in the shopper's usual US size — Zara outerwear typically needs to go up one, sometimes two, full sizes to close comfortably over a sweater, and Zara does not publish a coat-specific chart to warn about it. Denim is the second: Zara jean waistbands have very little stretch recovery, so the tape-measured waist matters more than the label, and buyers who normally size down in stretch denim will find Zara punishing. A third mistake is buying Zara Kids by age instead of by height in cm — the age labels run about six months small.
How Zara Compares
A Zara women's L is roughly a US M in Gap or Old Navy, and men's shirts sit about one size below a Uniqlo equivalent, which is a bigger gap than most cross-shoppers expect. Against Mango — probably the closest cut on the high street — Zara is a touch shorter in the body but similar through the shoulders, and Mango tends to be more consistent between collections. Against COS (Zara's more upscale peer in the H&M group's price bracket), Zara is trimmer through the waist but shorter overall.
