Fit Notes
Dr. Martens boots are sold only in whole sizes, so half-size buyers have to make a call — and the brand's own recommendation is to size down when between sizes because the leather stretches significantly with wear. The 1460 (eight-eye) and 1461 (three-eye) share the same last and fit identically, and the Chelsea 2976 uses a slightly narrower version of the same last. The Vegan line runs a touch tighter than the leather line and does not stretch the same way, so the standard 'size down' advice doesn't apply cleanly to the Vegan Felix or Vegan 1460. The Made in England capsule uses a subtly different last than the mainline and fits a hair snugger at the same nominal size.
Common Sizing Mistakes
The dominant mistake is sizing up 'to be safe' — a Docs boot that starts loose stays loose because the leather relaxes into an even bigger shape, and buyers end up with permanent heel slip. The break-in period is real (two to four weeks) and the second common mistake is returning boots as painful before they've had a chance to soften — the Wear In or Get Out socks and copious lacing adjustments make a genuine difference during that window. A third pitfall is treating the Jadon (double-sole) as identical in fit to the 1460; it's a hair snugger in the toe box and heavier through the foot.
How Dr. Martens Compares
Against Blundstone, Dr. Martens run about half a size larger and much stiffer out of the box, which is the trade-off for the Docs silhouette. Against Timberland, Docs are similar in length but noticeably narrower through the forefoot at the same nominal size. Against Solovair (which used to make Docs under contract), the two brands share a similar last but Solovair's leather is softer from day one.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I size up or down in Doc Martens?
Size down if between sizes. Dr. Martens leather stretches and molds to your foot during break-in.
Do Dr. Martens come in half sizes?
Traditional Dr. Martens do not come in half sizes. If you're a half size, size down for a snugger fit that will stretch.
How long is Dr. Martens break-in?
Break-in typically takes 3-6 weeks of regular wear. The leather softens and conforms to your foot shape over time.
