Uniqlo is drafted on a Japanese size block, which effectively runs a full size below US labeling — a Uniqlo L is closest to a US M for most builds, and this offset is consistent across categories, which is one of the brand's real strengths. The published measurements per garment are unusually accurate and reliable, so measuring a favorite shirt and matching it to the chart is a better approach than trusting the letter size. Sleeve lengths on button-downs run short compared with US shirts of the same nominal size, and the U (Uniqlo U) collaboration line is cut slightly boxier than the mainline. The +J and JW Anderson collaborations use their own drafts and lean more European.
How Uniqlo Compares
Uniqlo runs about one full size smaller than Gap and roughly half a size smaller than H&M's basics, though it is significantly more consistent than either between drops. Compared to Muji — the closest philosophical peer — Uniqlo's cut is more tapered through the waist and slightly shorter in the sleeve. Against COS, Uniqlo is comparable in the chest but noticeably shorter in overall length, which is where taller buyers usually run into trouble.
Common Sizing Mistakes
The frequent mistake is ordering an Airism or HEATTECH base layer in the buyer's usual size — those garments are engineered to fit skin-close, and sizing up neutralizes the thermoregulation the fabric is engineered to deliver. On outerwear, the Ultra Light Down is intentionally slim; a buyer who plans to wear a sweater under it needs to size up, and the Hybrid Down Parka is even more restrictive than the Ultra Light. Buyers also frequently miss that the Smart Ankle Pants come in three separate blocks (Cotton, Ponte, and 2-Way Stretch) that fit meaningfully differently at the same waist number.
