Fit Notes
The North Face jackets are drafted with layering in mind — the Denali fleece and the Thermoball run fairly close to the body specifically so a shell can go over them without ballooning. Shells like the Venture, Antora, and Dryzzle, by contrast, are cut roomy so a mid-layer fits underneath, and sizing up on those is almost always a mistake. Base-layer and hoodie fits are true to size, and the men's tall program is drafted separately rather than just extended in length. Women's TNF is not simply a scaled men's block — the shoulder and hip ratios are meaningfully different, and cross-gender substitution rarely works.
Common Sizing Mistakes
The classic mistake is sizing up on a shell 'for layering' when The North Face has already accounted for it in the pattern — that produces a sail-like fit and defeats the shell's ability to shed weather cleanly. On women's, buyers frequently order the Osito fleece in their usual size and find it snug because it's cut deliberately close to the body — the trade-off for the silhouette the line is designed around. A third pitfall is the Nuptse and Himalayan puffers, which use a different block than the shells and run a full step more relaxed at the same nominal size.
How The North Face Compares
Against Patagonia, The North Face shells are cut a touch longer in the body and slightly shorter in the sleeve, which is where migrating buyers usually feel the difference first. Against Columbia, TNF is meaningfully more athletic in the block — a Columbia jacket in the same size will feel boxier through the chest and shorter in the sleeve. Against Arc'teryx, TNF is a full step more relaxed and shorter in the torso.
