Gap holds one of the most consistent US size blocks in mainstream retail — a Gap medium in 2018 is still a Gap medium today, which is unusual for the sector and useful as a reference point when comparing other brands. Fit names do real work: Slim, Standard, Straight, and Relaxed each correspond to a defined chest-to-waist drop, so reading the fit label matters more than the S/M/L on the tag. Women's jeans use both numeric and letter sizing and the two do not always line up cleanly, especially in the Vintage Slim and '90s Loose fits. How Gap Compares

The main return reason is buying the wrong fit rather than the wrong size — a Straight-fit chino in a Slim buyer's usual size will feel like a different garment, and the fit code carries more information than the waist number. On the women's side, the mistake is assuming Gap's petite sizing is just shorter; the armhole and rise are also redrafted, so a regular size shortened at a tailor won't reproduce the same fit. A third recurring issue is women's denim in the Vintage Slim line running noticeably tighter through the thigh than the numeric size suggests.
