Fit Notes
ASICS running shoes are drafted on a Japanese last that runs slightly narrower through the midfoot than the US average, and the length runs a touch short — many runners end up half a size above their usual Nike size. Gel-Kayano and GT-2000 stability models have a snugger heel counter than the neutral Nimbus or Novablast, and the Superblast sits in between the two in volume. Lifestyle silhouettes like the GEL-1130, GEL-Kayano 14, and GEL-NYC fit closer to true and are less demanding on fit. ASICS also offers 2E and 4E widths on several performance models, which is not widely advertised but genuinely available.
How ASICS Compares
Against Brooks, ASICS runs a hair shorter and narrower at the same nominal size — a Brooks 10 buyer is often an ASICS 10.5, and the difference is more pronounced on stability shoes than on neutral. Against Nike running, ASICS is about half a size shorter and comparable in width in the standard D. Against Saucony, ASICS is dimensionally very close but the toe box on Saucony's Endorphin line is slightly more accommodating.
Common Sizing Mistakes
The recurring mistake is ordering Kayanos in the same size as an old pair from three generations ago — the last has been redrawn twice in recent updates and current versions fit slightly shorter. The other is assuming ASICS only comes in one width; several key models offer 2E and 4E, which solves most 'they're too tight' complaints without changing length. A third pitfall on the lifestyle line is treating the GEL-1130 and GEL-NYC as identical — the 1130 has a snugger heel while the NYC has a more accommodating fit through the collar.
