Fit Notes
Abercrombie has spent the last few years redrafting its size block after years of complaints that it ran small, and the current line runs true to modern US sizing — a departure from the pre-2020 chart that many long-time buyers still don't realize. Menswear jeans (the Athletic Skinny and Athletic Slim) have a meaningfully wider thigh than the numeric waist suggests, which is a deliberate response to buyer feedback about the older cuts. Women's dresses in the current collections fit true in the bust but shorter in the length than most contemporary US labels. The YPB (activewear) sub-label uses a separately drafted athletic block and is closer to Lululemon in cut than to the mainline Abercrombie.
How Abercrombie & Fitch Compares
Against Hollister (its sister brand), Abercrombie is drafted slightly more mature and roomier through the shoulder at the same nominal size. Against American Eagle, Abercrombie's denim tends to have a wider thigh at the same labeled waist. Against J.Crew's Classic Fit, current Abercrombie is comparable in the chest but a hair shorter in the body.
Common Sizing Mistakes
The recurring mistake is trusting a size memory from the older Abercrombie sizing — a buyer who used to size up here doesn't need to anymore, and the current line is drafted much closer to standard US than the pre-2020 chart was. On denim, buyers often ignore the fit name (Athletic vs. Slim Straight vs. Loose) and pick by waist alone; the same waist number fits meaningfully differently across those cuts. A third pitfall is the YPB line — buyers ordering it in their mainline Abercrombie size often find the leggings too loose because YPB is drafted for compression.
