Fit Notes
H&M basics — the Cotton, Regular Fit, and Modern Classic ranges — fit close to true US sizing and are the most reliable part of the catalogue, with published chest measurements that match the finished garment within about half an inch. The Divided (younger) and trend-led seasonal drops are cut noticeably smaller and shorter, and the Man collection is more tailored than the mainline. Kids' clothing is sized purely by height in centimeters, which is more accurate than age-based US labels if you actually measure the child before ordering. The Conscious and Premium capsules use their own drafts and don't cross-reference cleanly to the core chart.
How H&M Compares
H&M's men's basics sit in the same territory as Uniqlo, but with slightly shorter sleeve lengths and a shorter overall body. Women's fashion pieces trend closer to Zara in cut than to Gap, though H&M is generally half a size more generous than Zara across the board, which is why Zara refugees find H&M easier. Against Cos and Arket (both H&M Group), H&M's Modern Classic is a touch more relaxed and considerably shorter in the sleeve.
Common Sizing Mistakes
The classic mistake is assuming an H&M size stays constant between collections; it doesn't, and a Divided medium and a Modern Classic medium can be a full size apart on the same rack. On menswear, buyers also underestimate how slim the Slim Fit shirts are cut through the chest — the Regular Fit is closer to what most US brands call slim, and the Muscle Fit is genuinely restrictive on a non-lean torso. Kids' sizing by age instead of by height is the third recurring return: the height chart is meaningfully more accurate than the age band.
