Fit Notes
Birkenstock sizes are European whole sizes, and the sandals come in two widths — Regular (wider) and Narrow — with the same length, which means the width choice matters as much as the size. The cork footbed is molded, not soft, and takes about two weeks to conform to the wearer's foot; a Birkenstock that feels neutral out of the box is almost always too big and will slap once the cork breaks in. Toe and heel should sit about 3–5mm inside the raised edges of the footbed for a correct fit. The Boston clog uses the same footbed as the Arizona but has an enclosed toe box that runs a hair snugger — buyers cross-shopping between the two often need to size up half in the Boston.
Common Sizing Mistakes
The most frequent mistake is sizing up because the sandal feels rigid at first — that rigidity is the point, and sizing up produces a slap that never goes away because the footbed molds to a wider position than the foot actually needs. The second is buying Regular width when Narrow was correct: Birkenstock's Regular is genuinely wide and swims on a narrow foot, and the width designation is stamped inside the strap for reference. A third pitfall is the Papillio and Birkenstock Professional lines, which use slightly different footbed shapes than the mainline and cannot be sized off a regular Arizona.
How Birkenstock Compares
Against Teva, Birkenstock runs a touch shorter at the same EU size and is much firmer underfoot. Against Chaco, Birkenstock's footbed is more contoured but offers no strap adjustability, which is the fit compromise between the two brands. Against Naot — the closest cork-footbed competitor — Birkenstock is a hair narrower in Regular width and comparable in the Narrow.

Your foot should sit within the footbed with 5mm space at toe and heel. Toes should not touch the edge of the toe bar. The heel cup should cradle your heel.
Should I size up in Birkenstocks?
