    Fit Notes

New Balance is one of the few remaining volume brands that actually sells its shoes in real widths — B, D, 2E, 4E, and 6E — and the length only makes sense once the width is right. Most Made-in-USA models (990, 993, 998, 992) run true to size in length but roomier in the toe box than a comparable Nike or Adidas, and the 990v6 in particular has a more accommodating forefoot than the v5. Apparel is cut athletic-standard and reliably true to size, with the Made in USA capsule using a slightly more tailored block. The Fresh Foam and FuelCell running lines are drafted narrower than the classic 990 family.

    Common Sizing Mistakes

The single most common mistake is picking a standard-width New Balance and finding it too tight through the forefoot when a 2E would have solved it — New Balance is where a lot of runners discover they've been wearing narrow shoes their whole career. The second is assuming the 990 and the 574 fit the same; the 574 is noticeably narrower and shorter in the toe box, so a 990 buyer usually needs to size up half in a 574. A third pitfall: the 550, despite being a lifestyle silhouette, uses a basketball-inspired last that fits shorter than the 990 by nearly a half size.

    How New Balance Compares

Against Nike, New Balance runs a bit longer at the same nominal size and is considerably wider through the forefoot at the same width designation. Against Brooks — the closest technical-running comparison — New Balance is similar in length but generally offers a wider standard toe box, and Brooks' 2E is closer to NB's D. Against Hoka, New Balance sits lower to the ground and feels more secure through the midfoot at the same size.
