Fit Notes
Levi's jeans are labeled in true waist × inseam inches, but the fit code (501, 511, 505, 512, 550, 559, 569) changes the silhouette far more than the numbers suggest — the same 34×32 sits at meaningfully different points on the body across those fits. Rigid, non-stretch denim like the 501 Original will relax roughly an inch in the waist after a few wears, so ordering the tape-measured waist is correct — do not size down to compensate. Shrink-to-Fit (STF) styles are the exception and shrink 1–2 inches in the waist and 2–3 in the length on first wash, exactly as the pocket tag instructs. The Women's Wedgie, Ribcage, and 501 '81 use separate blocks and cannot be sized off one another.
Common Sizing Mistakes
The most frequent return: buying a 501 in the same size as a 511 and finding the waist gaps because the 501 sits higher and has a straighter block, so the same waist number effectively rides at a different point on the body. The second: ordering STF pre-shrunk in the label size instead of sizing up 1 in the waist and 3 in the length as the tag actually instructs — many buyers skim past that step and end up with jeans that shrink out of range. A third pitfall is Made & Crafted and LVC (Levi's Vintage Clothing) sizing, which uses vintage-accurate cuts that run a size smaller than the mainline.
How Levi's Compares
Against Wrangler, Levi's waist measurements are almost identical but the rise is higher on the 501 and 550, and the thigh is straighter on Wrangler at the same size. Against premium denim like AG or Citizens of Humanity, Levi's tends to run about half an inch larger in the waist for the same labeled size — those brands take a stricter reading. Against Lee, Levi's 511 is slimmer through the thigh than a Lee Modern Series slim at the same label.
