J.Crew's Classic and Slim fits are the reference points; the recent Relaxed line is a genuine third option and not just a rebadged Classic, and buyers who found J.Crew too tight in the 2010s should revisit the Relaxed cuts specifically. Menswear shirts (the Bowery and the Ludlow) are drafted on separate blocks — the Ludlow is meaningfully slimmer through the chest and waist and sits closer to a European tailored fit. Womenswear dresses run short in the torso, and the petite line uses its own chart rather than a shortened regular pattern. The Wallace & Barnes sub-label uses a heavier, boxier draft than the mainline.
How J.Crew Compares
Against Banana Republic, J.Crew Slim is a hair tighter through the waist and comparable in the chest, and cross-shoppers usually stay at the same numeric size. Against Madewell (its sister brand), J.Crew women's tends to be a touch more polished and slightly less oversized at the same label. Against Everlane, J.Crew Classic is closer in cut than Everlane's own Classic line, which runs a size boxier.
Common Sizing Mistakes
The recurring mistake on menswear is picking a Ludlow shirt in the buyer's usual Bowery size — the Ludlow is a full step tighter through the chest, and the sleeve is drafted shorter too. On women's, buyers frequently return the Tissue Turtleneck because it's much sheerer and cut smaller than a typical J.Crew top and does not behave like the rest of the catalogue.
